- Thanks to the Committee for giving up your time to make the club run and to all those other members who do bits and bobs for the club and often go unrecognised.
- For those of you who aren’t aware the Club has been award Volvo Championship Club Status (VCC) following a lot of hard work by many individuals. What is VCC I hear you ask? A Quote from the RYA....
- A VCC is essentially a club which makes a commitment to deliver safe, effective racing and race training in the RYA recognised classes these are the Topper, Mirror, Cadet, Laser 4.7, Optimist, RS Feva and BIC Techno 293 Windsurf board. Additionally, clubs which are VCC's agree to support (via well organised coaching as well as advice, expertise and encouragement) the on going development of young sailors within their club and help to facilitate their progression into regional competition and subsequently into RYA squad programmes. In short if you are keen for your young sailor to progress down the competitive dinghy/windsurf racing route there is no better foundation of training. It truly represents the bedrock of the RYA's Youth programmes. For parents and sailors VCC's should be sociable, involving, fun and safe places to spend time with like minded families enjoying an active sport.
- This in turn has lead to an increase in adult sailing members, cadet members sailing both informally and racing and social members enjoying the bar and view.
- Socials
- The annual dinner dance seems a long time ago now back in November, which was held at Middleton Sports Club, where everyone dressed up in their finest attire.
- News Year Eve at FSC was well attended – this was based on a bring a plate of food and wow, there was a huge amount of food, not to mention a chocolate cake almost the size of a mirror dinghy. It was great to see some social members too.
- At the time of writing we are coming up to the Prizegiving and Supper Night on 28th January.
- Bar
- We are looking for someone to manage the bar and to work Sundays from 12-6pm in particular. There will be other evenings during the sailing season, possible Wednesdays and Thursdays. Are you able to help your club? Please contact any member of the Committee.
-
- The bar is presently open on the first and third Friday in the month over the winter months. Come down and finish the week with a relaxing drink.
- Dinghy Park
- Your committee have been considering ways to expand the dinghy park, and have made the decision to relinquish the FSC parking spaces, and turn the fence 90 degrees creating further dinghy spaces. Please also remember to look after ALL the sails and equipment in the containers and a gentle reminder for those storing bits in the container that are not foils or sails, to remove them, as space is a premium and these will be disposed of, if not removed.
- Membership Renewal
- It’s that time again – membership renewals are due and the forms are enclosed with this Newsletter.
- Cadets
- Congratulations to Toby Schofield for being voted Cadet Captain for this year – Cadets if there is anything you wish to bring to the Committee’s attention, speak to Toby and he will let us know. The club is open on the first and third Friday of the month during the winter months, from approximately 7.15pm
- Training Matters
- Last year we had a very successful year with both power and dinghy courses.
- Through working with the 1st Felpham Sea Scouts we were able to give many more members (both young and older) the opportunity to learn new powerboat skills, increase their competence level and start to grow their experience day by day.
- Our instructor cadre also had a massive boost with an influx of instructors after the Assistant Instructor, Dinghy Instructor, Senior Instructor, and Power Instructor courses had been run. Thank you and well done to all those who undertook training and started to help swell the numbers of instructors at FSC.
- This year our 2012 training is just about to get under way. We have a RYA First Aid Course on 4th February and we re-start the Theory Thursdays on Feb 2nd. In February there will be four Theory Thursday sessions leading towards the RYA Level 2 Powerboat qualification. These are at 1915-2100 and are open to all members. if you just want to come along to brush up your navigation theory it is free, but if you want to work towards RYA Level 2 Powerboat there will be a charge. All four sessions are need to complete the level 2 theory.
- Look out for more Theory Thursdays in March which will be focussing on the RYA Safety Boat course. I will be contacting all those who already have Level 2 Powerboat to encourage them to improve their skills to better support racing and the forthcoming Regatta in September 2012.
- Also this year we hope to be organising some specific race training for improvers as well as specific class training for the more popular classes at FSC. And of course there will be the usual Start Sailing and Start Racing courses for those just starting out.
- Besides the formal RYA training that leads to a certificate there will be lots of informal sessions on Saturdays when there will be opportunities to improve your skills.
- If you wish to know more about what is going on or to enrol on the courses in February please ring me on 01243 587883. And if you wish to be an Assistant Instructor or Dinghy Instructor please give me a ring as well; I am starting to plan participation in these courses right now - don't delay ring today!
- Look forward to seeing you on the water soon.
